IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL DETECTION OF CARCINOEMBRYONIC ANTIGEN (CEA) IN THE EPITHELIA OF INFLAMED HUMAN GINGIVA

Background: Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), an important tumor marker, is a cell adhesion molecule. CEA is a member of the CEA-family of related glycoproteins, which belong to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Methods: CEA and CEA-related antigens have been detected in human saliva and in salivary glands. We investigated the epithelia of healthy and inflamed human gingiva immunohistochemically for the presence of CEA by using monoclonal and polyclonal anti-human CEA antibodies. The antibodies used did not show any positive staining of neutrophils. Results: On colonic adenocarcinoma tissue these antibodies showed typical apical staining of the polarized epithelial cells. The expression of CEA in the gingival epithelial tissue from patients with periodontal disease was observed on the cells of both the outer and the inner gingiva. The immunostaining pattern was strongest in the basal cell layer and CEA was detected on the whole cell surface. Epithelial cells of healthy gingival tissue showed only weak CEA reactivity in the basal cell layer. Conclusion: The expression of CEA in the epithelia of human gingiva indicated that CEA could play a role in the inflammation of periodontal tissue. |
