  Abstract:
Background: Two types of ribonuclease (RNase) activity exist in plasma and white blood cells - alkaline and acid ribonuclease. Many investigators have examined alkaline ribonuclease activity in malignant diseases, but there are not the reports related to this enzyme activity in lung carcinomas. In the present study alkaline ribonuclease activity was measured in plasma and in blood white cells of patients who suffer from malignant lung diseases. Activity of alkaline RNase was determined with the aim to elucidate the clinical significance of this enzyme in lung neoplasms.
Methods: Alkaline ribonuclease activity (pH 7.8) was measured with the UV spectrophotometric method.
Results: Our obtained results show that alkaline ribonuclease in blood white cells is significantly higher in patients with malignant lung disease in comparison with the enzyme activity of control persons. Alkaline ribonuclease activity of blood white cells is a good biochemical marker for controlling the radiotherapy and progress of the disease. The enzyme activity of plasma is not useful marker for the detection of lung neoplasms which belong to squamous cell carcinoma.
Conclusion: The determination of leukocytes enzyme activity could be used for better diagnostic procedures in clinical praxis and particularly as good biochemical parameter for controlling the therapeutic course in lung carcinomas.
