  MUCINS AS TUMOUR MARKERS
Snezana GOLUBOVIC, Margita CUPERLOVIC
  DOI:
  Abstract:
Mucins are major carriers of tumour-associated antigens both in tumor tissue and in sera from cancer patients. Monoclonal antibodies specific for different epitopes on MUC1 mucin has been used extensively for studing neoplastic transformation and for development of serum immunoassays. The most frequently used assays are CA 19-9 and CA 15-3 for pancreatic and breast cancer, respectively. Although they could not be used for diagnosis of primary tumors, they are usefull for monitoring of the antineoplastic treatment. Investigation of the mucins in pathological conditions as well as their function in normal tissue is important for possible development of adequate therapy of cancer patients.
