  Abstract:
Background: We have determined the values of coagulation and fibrinolytic system parameters in the plasma of 30 patients with histologically confirmed malignant melanoma in its metastatic phase (T0N1-4M1), before any specific antitumor therapy. The aim of the study was to establish the actual occurrence frequency of disorders of coagulation and fibrinolytic systems factors and their interdependence in metastatic malignant melanoma cases.
Methods: The level of the following parameters was determined: prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen, D-dimer, antithrombin III (AT III), factors VII (F VII), X (F X), XII (F XII) and alpha-2 antiplasmin (alpha-2 AP). Twenty voluntary blood donors represented the control group.
Results: In all subjects, pathological values of two or more parameters were registered. Most frequently, pathological values were observed in D-dimer (100%), fibrinogen (93%) and aPTT (73%). Values of fibrinogen and D-dimer were increased and statistically very significant as compared with the controls; values of AT III were increased with moderate significance. Alpha-2 AP values were reduced with the high degree of significance.
Conclusion: Obtained results suggest that the changes of coagulation and fibrinolysis in patients with metastatic malignant melanoma are common and indicate activation of both systems.
