  THE INFLUENCE OF IONIZING RADIATION ON GLUCURONIDE METABOLISM IN RATS WITH REGARD TO CANCER INDUCTION

  Background: It is a well-known fact that ionizing irradiation usually elevates GUS activity in tissues and that high GUS activity could lead to glucuronide aglycone accumulation. Each of these processes also could cause neoplastic transformations. Having in mind all of these, we investigate if ionizing radiation also causes free aglycone accumulation. If so, it suggests that the accumulation could be a part of mechanisms leading to neoplastic transformations in irradiated organisms.
Methods: For this purpose a new method for glucuronide metabolism investigation was created and the glucuronide metabolism was investigated in the serum and some tissues of non-irradiated male Wistar rats and rats one and four weeks after exposure to nine Gy doses irradiation.
Results: It was found that ionizing irradiation does influences accumulation of glucuronide«s aglycone in serum and tissues. The mechanism of this influence is based not only at the increase in GUS activity but mainly on decrease in UDPGT activity.
Conclusion: We suggest that glucuronide aglycone accumulation caused by ionizing irradiation could be related to a cancer incidence in irradiated organisms.
