CLINICAL-EPIDEMIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MULTIPLE BASOCELLULAR CARCINOMAS ON THE CLINIC FOR DERMATOLOGY AND VENEROLOGY IN NOVI SAD, 1986-1996

The authors present clinical characteristics of tumors and their frequency in patients affected with multiple superficial basocellular carcinomas (MSBC).
Our examination included only the patients with MSBC over a ten-year period. Out of the total number of 2,218 patients with nonmelanotic malignant epithelial tumors of the skin (NMETS), twenty-two were diagnosed with MSBC, which makes an overall incidence of 0.99%. The average annual number of patients with NMETS was 221.8. The average annual number of those with MSBC was 2.2. In relation to the incidence of BC of the skin in patients examined on the Clinic for Dermatology and Venerology in the same period (total of 1,220 patients) the incidence of patients with of MSBC was 1.80%.
In the examined group of patients the total number of the changes belonging to superficial types of BC was 110, and the average number of the changes was 5. Distribution of the localization of MSBC per patient of the same group showed that the most numerous were the tumors on the skin of the back (42-38.18%), thorax (29-26.36%), abdomen (25-22.73%) while the tumors on the presternum were the least in the number (14-12.73%).
Our principal aim was to point out genetic predisposition as the key etiologic factor in the appearance of superficial MSBC on trunk, rather than occupational, accidental photoexposure to UV rays, although its importance as an adjuvant factor cannot be overlooked. We also tried to indicate the frequency of disease appearance among the older people and its prevalence in men. |
