  Abstract:
Cancer of the colon is the most common cancer in our population. Incidence of, as well as mortality from colon cancer has been increasing significantly over the past twenty-four-year period from 1973-1996. The main objective of the study was to investigate the epidemiologic patterns of colon cancer in Vojvodina. We use descriptive epidemiologic method to analyse incidence of and mortality from colon cancer. The level of colon cancer incidence and mortality rates, with time trends during 1973-1996 in Vojvodina were the main outcome measures in this study. During the observed period 3603 newly diagnosed cases of colon cancer were reported for males and 3705 for females which gives the average crude annual incidence rate of 15.6 and 15.2 per 100 000 respectively. The average age standardised incidence rate (world standard population) was 11.3 for males and 9.1 for females. At the same time a total of 2539 males and 2584 females died of colon cancer. The average crude annual mortality rate was 10.8 for males and 10.5 per 100 000 for females respectivetly. The average age standardised mortality rate was 7.83 for males and 6.06/100 000 for females. The incidence rate has been increasing significantly over the observed period with the highest rate in 1992 for males (26.9 per 100 000) and in 1990 for females (24.0 per 100 000). Case fatality rate is 70.47% for males and 69.74% for females. The linear trend in incidence and mortality during the whole observed period showed an increasing tendency in both genders. The average age specific incidence as well as mortality rates were increasing with age, most rapidly after the age of 75. The median for the age of incidence is 63.83 years and for mortality it is 64.46 years for males. For females it is 65.32 years for incidence and for mortality it is 67.59 years. The median linear time trends of incidence and mortality for both gender are pulling out to an earlier-age groups. According to the epidemiological data from the population based cancer registry, the Province of Vojvodina is a region with an important risk for colon cancer. However, the increase in the incidence and mortality from colon cancer in both genders asks for improved methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment as colon cancer could become increasingly important as public health issue.
