The purpose of this article is to evaluate the significance of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the estimation of local extension of cervical carcinoma (following staging criteria proposed by International Federation of Gynecology and Obstretics (FIGO)). Computed Tomography (CT) was the previous method of choice for local staging. However, it is not sensitive enough for evaluation of parametrial and/or pelvic sidewall infiltration, judging by the high number of false positive findings. MRI, however, appears to be a very accurate method, especially in the estimation of advanced stages of cervical carcinoma (Ib and higher grades). |
