Cervical cancer is still the second most common female malignancy in most countries around the world. Despite advances in surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment the overall survival with this disease has not changed in the last decade. With the development of molecular biology techniques we have been able to get an insight into the complex process of oncogenesis, especially the role of HPV infection in the development of cervical cancer. This article aims to summarize the developments in this field and discusses the future prospects. |
