A simple technique for determining internal mammary chain depth by sonography is used after breast amputation as the primary method for indirect localisation of internal mammary chain for the purpose of preparing the parasternal region for irradiation. Advantages of the method are pointed out: accuracy in the region of interest localisation, performance efficiency, reproducibility, photo-documentation, economy, ect. After breast cancer conservation surgery, the ultrasound is used to measure the breast thickness so important for the selection of the most appropriate electron energy for the boost. The method has been in use for a several years in our Institute of Oncology in Sremska Kamenica. Since the tumor bed is not invariably localised in the mammillary range, its computerised tomography scan being the basis for treatment planning, the ultrasonographic method provides a precise and fast measuring technique for regions outside the computerised tomography scan. |
