  Abstract:
Background: Because of a high incidence of cervical neoplasia and the fact that it develops from pre-malignant intraepithelial lesions, detection of intraepithelial lesions and their timely treatment is of greatest importance in fighting cervical cancer.
Methods: The above lesions have been detected by colposcopic and cytodiagnostic methods and verified by histological examination of biopsy samples.
Results: This paper presents the comparison of the results obtained in the above studies, with the objective of aiding in the evaluation of the validity of detection methods. The study included 1000 female patients with histologically confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. The analysis of colposcopic results has shown that cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL were most commonly manifested as a mosaic. The finding with such an image, however, as well as the image of iodine-negative fields, aceto-white field and combined pathological findings did not differ in incidence in less severe, low-grade SIL (LSIL) and more severe, high-grade SIL (HSIL) stages of the disease. The cytodiagnostic method has not proven sufficiently sensitive in detecting cervical SIL. The result obtained with this method was normal (PA II) in as many as 66.7% of studied women. Comparison of the results obtained with this method in lesions of lSiL and HSIL type demonstrated that its sensitivity was higher in HSIL i.e. it increased with the increase in the severity of the histological finding.
Conclusion: Based on the results obtained in this study, it may be concluded that colposcopy is a more reliable method in detecting cervical SIL than cytodiagnostics.
