  DETECTION OF EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS DNA IN NON-HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA BY IN SITU HYBRIDIZATION

  Background: Since the initial discovery that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) induced lymphoid cells to proliferative, investigators have sought to implicate the virus in the pathogenesis of lymphoproliferative disease. During the last decade many investigators tried to found out more about a presence and a role of EBV in malignant lymphoma.
Materil and Methods: We used in situ hybridization (LSH) employing a biotinylated EBV sequence, Bam H1-W (3.1kb) to detect this sequence in tissues from 46 patients with Non-Hodgkin´s lymphoma (NHL).
Results: From 46 patients with NHL that we have studied for presence of EBV DNA, we detected EBV DNA by ISH in 10 patients (21.74%). EBV DNA was detected in all stages of malignancy: in 2 (20%) low, in 6 (22.2%) intermediate and in 2 (22.2%) high level NHL. We found EBV DNA in all clinical stages, exept in the first stage.
Conclusion: Detection of EBV viral sequences in NHL can be associated with a possible role in a tumorogenesis.
