  Abstract:
Colposcopical and cytological examinations of the uterine cervix together with biopsy make the triad providing us with great certainty in determining changes in the cervical epithelium. This paper's aim is to emphasize the importance of the opportune screening of women, followed by the analysis of the diagnosed Low Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions (LGSIL) of the uterine cervix associated with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, in early detection of precancerous cervical changes. The authors analyzed 188 cases histologically diagnosed as LGSIL (Condyloma planum cervicis), in the period from 1994-1998 in the Outpatient Department for Women in Health Centre in Ruma. The cervical biopsy was performed on the basis of cytological and/or colposcopical findings. The mean age of the patients was 34.99. Half of the patiens (50%) were under 35 years of age. Cytological findings were suspicious in 64.89%, whereas colposcopical findings were atypical in 85.64%. HPV typization was performed in 81.91% of patients. 42.21% of these patients had HPV infection. Infection caused by high oncogenic HPV types (16,18) was present in 28.57%. Routine work of the Gynecological Outpatient Department should include cytological and colposcopical screening together with cervical biopsy within the estabilished indications. of every woman undergoing the first gynecological examination for any reason.
