Delivering of efficient and high quality health care depends on the ability of health care centers to capture and process many items of information. A task of building a computer based information system for health care centers is complex because the data involved are diverse and variable: some data are precise yet the other data are vague, some are given in a fixed format and other are narrative in nature, some data are in form of numbers and tables while the other are in form of graphics and images. The task is further complicated by the exceptions, alerts, urgent situations and unexpected events that are inherent to everyday operation of health care centers. The topic of the paper is a project of integrated information system that is initiated at the Institute of Oncology, Sremska Kamenica, Yugoslavia. The paper presents initial results of the feasibility study aimed at laying out the groundwork for the integrated information system. We specify general requirements and propose a first cut functional and physical decomposition of the information system. We also address the other issues including project planning, pilot project, and software and hardware platforms. Carefully specified, designed, and implemented integrated information system has a potential to significantly improve medical, administrative, and business operation of the Institute. A strong commitment of the management to the project is considered a key to achieve the project goals. |
