  Abstract:
Background: It has been acknowledged that morphometry can contribute to distinction and classification of different histological forms of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on new criteria, and hence to the prognosis of HCC. However, overlapping of the results among different forms makes the capacity of these measurements somewhat restricted. In this paper we present the morpho- and densitometric measurements of HCC based on histological grading.
Methods: Comparative morpho - densitometric measurements of histological preparations and histological grading from liver biopsy specimens were performed in 23 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and 18 subjects with normal histological finding.
Results: Our results show that there is a constant, statistically significant ascending pattern and parallelism between histological grades (healthy subjects, grade I, II and III HCC) and corresponding nucleo - cytoplasmic indices (NCI's) among areas and perimeters whereas optical density (O.D.) NCI's, although still showing similar pattern, express less regularity in the domain of statistical inference.
Conclusion: Preliminary results show that morphometric measurements are good correlates of histological grade of HCC. Abbreviations: HCC - hepatocellular carcinoma, NCI nucleo cytoplasmic index OD Optical density.
