  Abstract:
Background: A thymic peptide, Thymosin a1, has been shown to have a broad spectrum of immunological activities. This study was designed to establish the thymosin a1 levels in colorectal cancer patients before and after surgical treatment.
Methods: Thymosin a1 serum levels were determined in 30 colorectal patients by enzyme immunoassay (EIA, Immunodiagnostic) before and after operation and compared to the values obtained from the control group, consisting of 15 healthy volunteers.
Results: Blood serum samples of 30 colorectal cancer patients before surgical treatment gave a mean value of Thymosin a1 (X0=23.41 pg/ml). These findings of serum Thymosin a1 are significantly lower in relation to the values of the control group (Xet=217.23 pg/ml). The results of the preliminary study showed that Thymosin a1 blood serum levels in colorectal patients are significantly lower before surgical treatment compared to those during postoperative period (30 and 90 days). In the postoperative phase an increasing tendency of this thymic peptide serum values can be observed.
Conclusion: The measurement of Thymosin a1 can be an essential part of contemporary prognostic procedures, useful in clinical treatment and follow-up of the patients with malignant diseases.
Key words: Thymosin a1; Colorectal malignancy; Enzyme-immunoassay (EIA)
