ABSTRACT
Advanced rectal cancer is a great clinical problem, with the symptoms of rectal bleeding, pain, etc., and the fact that local control and survival rates are poor. A combined treatment of brachytherapy and teletherapy has been used in the Institute of Oncology Sremska Kamenica since 1984, in order to improve the results of the treatment. Initially, the intracavitary brachytherapy was provided by manual LDR afterloading using a rigid design of rectal applicator. However, since 1977, with the availability of remote afterloading Selectron-LDR/MDR brachytherapy, a new design of flexible inflatable rectal applicator has been developed. Further improvements became available in 1989 when miscroSelectropn-HDR was procured in our Institute. This equipment has the advantage of small diameter interstitial implant tubes, which made possible the designing of a multi-channel rectal applicator.
