ABSTRACT
Introduction
There are 13000 nurses and nurse assistants in Slovenia (in a country with two million people and with twelve years independence). They are united in eleven regional organizations and associated in the Nurses association of Slovenia. Inside this structure there are about 30 professional sections, which cover different professional fields. Among this The Section for Enterostomal Therapy is also very active. The main goal of the association is to unit the ETs and others nurses with special interest in enterostomal therapy. The Section for ET has approximately 100 - 150 members. There are 50 ET in Slovenia.
National education training programs
We have one ET school at the University Medical Center Ljubljana. It is organized every three or four years. Our program is evaluated by the ETNEP - Education Committee that is organized by WCET - World Council of Enterostomal Therapists. In 1999 14 new ETs (two from Bosnia and Herzegovina) finished with education program, in 2002 12 new ET was attend the school which contain 160 hours of theory and 160 hours of practice. We also started with short courses for wound management, stoma care and incontinence. Our ET nurses were very active in ILCO Association (The Ostomy Association Slovenia) where they have begun with education of volunteers.
Ostomy association
There are four units and some sections included in the Ostomy Association Slovenia. Ostomates are very active. They are joined in social life; they have lectures about eating habits, preventing skin around stomas, new products on market and so on. We estimate there are about 2000 ostomates in Slovenia. General ostomy association ILCO has about 1300 registered members and their relatives. The association has its own publication and gazette. In October 2001 they organized a course for volunteers to talk with future ostomates.
Future plans
We will tray to achieve appropriate status of ET as the independent and autonomous profile the nurse with knowledge about ET, incontinence care, fistulas and wound management. Every year we will tray to organize one of two days and one one-day professional meeting. We are going to choose the subject that will be propose of some medical organizations or an individual. We are expecting that nurses from former Yugoslavia are going to help each other to link together in different way of education. In the future we plane to organize ET school for foreign students.
