ABSTRACT
The municipal
Society for the Fight against Cancer in Sombor carries out health
education, prevention and early diagnosis of malignant diseases,
and takes care of the patients affected with malignant diseases.
This activity is performed through the Club of Women who were
surgically treated for breast diseases (the club was founded 12
years ago), and Stoma Center, which celebrated its first anniversary
of existence and active work in June this year. Thirty-four meetings
have been held so far. The coordinator of the Stoma Center is
a stoma nurse, who starts working with patients at the surgery
ward. Expert support and organization of the work of Stoma Center
is provided by a doctor - oncologist from the Oncology Clinic.
Stoma patients can get advices every day and they also have regular
meetings every Thursday from 12.00-13.00 h, on which, besides
the exchange of useful personal experience, various experts of
different profiles (sociologists, psychologists, nutritionists,
etc.) give lectures based on expressed needs. These meetings are
the chance for introducing new habits related to diet, clothing
and everyday activities, which have special value in the life
of stoma patients. We have submitted a request to the Public Health
and Insurance Fund to approve the supply of additional discs for
bags at the fund's expense and received a positive response. Our
stoma patients are involved in other activities of the Society
for the Fight against Cancer - organization of formal meeting
in March (the month of fight against cancer), picnics, parties,
and meetings with other clubs such as Mastectomy Club and Abstinence
Club. This way of socialization of individuals has proved to be
very successful in spite of difficulties encountered in our conservative
environment. In our future work we plan a continuous education
of stoma nurse, cooperation with other stoma centers in our country
and abroad, better cooperation with manufacturers and distributors
of prosthetic aid and accessory products, and thus improve the
quality of life of our patients.
