ABSTRACT
Malignant
melanoma of skin is a tumor particulary common in white-skined populations
living in sunny climates. Thus, high rates of incidence are found
in Australia and New Zealand (age-standardised incidence rate 39.9
in men and 32.3 in women) and North America (12.74 in men and 9.26
in women).Skin melanoma has a high survival rate in developed areas
with the best rates in Australia and New Zealand (85%), and in developing
countries is poorer (about 40%). Thus, the range of mortality rates
among areas of the world is much less then of incidence rates. In
all, 132 602 new cases are estimated annualy (with slightly more
in women then in men) and 37 047 deaths, more of which occur in
men.
In order to find out the epidemiology situation concerning malignant
melanoma in Niš, we undertook a retrospective analysis of newly
registered cases over a period of five years (1999-2003.) The data
were obtained from the Hospital Cancer Registry Clinic of oncology
Niš.
During the observed period (1999-2003.) there were 8048 reported
new cases (2931 men and 5117 women). Malignant melanoma of skin
were reported with 195 newly cases. According to the total number
of registered cases, malignant melanoma took the 13th places (both
gender) with 2,4%. In the precentage structure of all cancer sites,
malignant melanoma are represented with 3,1% in men (10th place)
and 2,03% in women (8th place). In analysing period, 91 cases of
malignant melanoma were reported in men and 104 women, sex ratio
1:1,14. The number of newly cases changed over the observed period,
showing a slightly increase by both gender, with the lowest values
in 1999. (34 patients) and the highest values in 2003. (55 patients).
The number of malignant melanoma increase with age, most rapidly
after the age of 60 (53 cases). The body site distribution differs
between sex and malignant melanoma is more common on the trunck
(25%) in men and on the lower limbs in women (19%).
According the such epidemiological data it can be concluded that
the region of Nis is not a region with an important risk for malignant
melanoma of skin. |
