Brief history:
In early 1963, a special Commission was appointed with the task of drafting a detailed proposal for the organization of the Institute of Oncology, which on 22nd May 1963 decided on the organization of the Oncology Institute in Novi Sad. On that date, the Assembly of AP Vojvodina issued an order on the establishment of the Clinical Hospital in Novi Sad. In Article XI of this order reads: "As a separate organizational unit of Clinical Hospital shall be established Department of Pathology and Institute of Oncology with the Central oncological dispensary, with accommodation in two smaller facilities in Betanija (so-called pavilions II and IV) with a total of 104 beds (42 surgery with reanimation, 41 gynecology and internal department 21). Faculty Administration of the Faculty of Medicine on 22nd November 1963 adopted a proposal to name Department of Oncology as a teaching base for practical training of medical students.
The Steering Committee of the Clinical Hospital named on 26th February 1965. first employees of the Institute for Oncology and this year is the year of the Oncology Institute of Vojvodina foundation.
Institute of Oncology under this name has existed since 1981.
Establishment of organizational units of the Institute went in this order:
1965. - Internal medicine department of the Institute of Oncology
1966. - Registry of malignant tumors of Vojvodina
1969. - Internal medicine department of the Institut of Pulmonary disease
1970. - Department of pathology and cytodiagnostics
1971. - Center for nuclear medicine
1972. - Divisions of Surgery department for breast and abdominal neoplasms
1977. - Internal medicine department of the Institute of Oncology
1981. - Clinic for Surgical Oncology
The Institute was moved into present building in 1977.

Number of beds:
239

Location:

The Institute of Oncology in Sremska Kamenica is located on the top of the hill called "Tatarsko brdo" in the center of the Sremska Kamenica.

WORK

SURGERY
Surgery is the oldest manner of healing applied to over 50% of patients independently or in combination with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
Operations:
Breasts (mastectomy, conserving operations, sentinel node biopsy, breast reconstruction); Abdominal surgery (colorectal, surgery of stomach, duodenum, small intestine, liver, pancreas); Endocrine surgery (thyroid and parathyroid gland); General surgical procedures (surgery of gall bladder, hernia, haemorrhoids, biopsies of changes on the skin)
Performing manner:
Classical and laparoscopic surgery, with general, local and combined (epidural, spinal and caudal) anaesthesia

GYNECOLOGY
Gynaecology applies 2 types of therapies: surgical (most often) and chemotherapy (most often as combined with surgical therapy), independent or in combination with radiotherapy.
Operations:
Gynecological (vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, endometrium, ovary and uterine tubes)
Performing manner:
Classical and laparoscopic surgery, with general anaesthesia

ANAESTHESIA AND INTENSIVE CARE
Anesthesia and Intensive care unit represent a segment of new and modern concept so called perioperative medicine, which includes preoperative preparation for surgical interventions, optimization of general health condition of oncological patients, with the point to create preconditions so that the seriously ill oncological patients could be also prepared for surgical interventions. It is done around 2500 general anesthesia and 500 procedural analgesia and analgesia outside of operating room, annually. Postoperative care of patients with a therapy of postoperative pain (either because of comlexity of operations, or because of necessary monitoring) take a place at the Intensive therapy and care unit.
Personnel performs general anesthesia, procedural analgesia and analgesia outside of operating room for different diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which take a place at the other departments at Oncology Institute, such as Department of Radiation Oncology - Brachytherapy and Cabinet of endoscopy.
Department of Outpatients clinic of the Institute includes also Anesthesiology policlinic unit and Cancer pain therapy policlinic unit.

MEDICAL ONCOLOGY
Medical oncology is a branch of medicine (along with surgery, gynecology and radiology form a multidisciplinary team) that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and follow-up of patients.
Procedures:
Endoscopy diagnostic procedures (upper endoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), interventional endoscopy procedures for treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding and polype electroresection), abdominal punction both diagnostic and therapeutic. Systematic therapy encompasses mono and combined modality chemotherapy , biologic therapy for inpatients and outpatients, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, bone marrow biopsy, sternal puncture, autologous stem-cell transplantation.

RADIOTHERAPY
Radiation therapy is a part of a multidisciplinary team for oncology treatment along with surgery, gynecology and internal oncology. Radiation therapy is used in the treatment of malignant and benign tumors either alone or in combination with other forms of treatment (surgery, chemotherapy). The benefits of high-energy radiation in order to destroy tumor cells. Clinical for Radiotherapy has the department for a high-voltage therapy, department for brachytherapy and department for hospital patients. The department for high-voltage therapy has 4 linear accelerators Varian 600dbx, Varian 2100C, Versa1 and Versa2. It has also a CT for planning radiation therapy simulator and treatment of patients for radiation therapy. Procedures which we use at this moment are conventional 2D techniques and conformal 3D techniques. The plan is to improve the existing techniques and the implementation of intensity modulated therapy -IMRT, VMAT. Department of brachytherapy patients treated primarily with gynecological tumors, and patients with lung cancer that our institution stands out as unique in the country. The department for hospital patients has a capacity of 81 beds. Radiology clinics located within the Day Hospital Institute of Oncology is responsible for the reception of patients in the hospital and outpatient treatment as well as patients receiving treatment for radiation therapy. At the Clinic for Radiation Therapy employs 19 doctors, 10 physicists, 31 technicians, 25 nurses, 1 modeler and 1 ancillary worker. Polyclinic for radiotherapy has 5 sisters and 2 administrative workers.
Radiation therapy uses high doses of high-energy radiation in order to destroy tumor cells. Radiation therapy is used in the treatment of malignant and benign tumors, either alone or in combination with other forms of treatment (surgery, chemotherapy). Radiation therapy is a local form of treatment because its effect depends on the capacity of absorption of ionizing radiation by irradiated body. According to data the radiotherapy is used in about 50% patients as the basic therapy or as a part of a differentiated oncology treatment. Adjuvant radiation therapy - the application of radiotherapy after surgical treatment. Neoadjuvant radiation therapy - the application of radiological treatment before surgical treatment to reduce or stop the growth of his. Curative radiotherapy - is applied as the only form of oncology treatment. Palliative radiotherapy - is applied to facilitate the symptoms caused by the tumor process.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE:
Nuclear medicine has a great importance in the diagnosis and therapy of tumors using radioactive isotopes.
Diagnostic procedures:
Scintigraphy with 99mTc, 131I and 18F-FDG (the whole body, thyroid gland, skeleton, lungs, myocardium, salivary glands, liver and endocrine tumors), PET/CT scintigraphy, ultrasound of thyroid gland, tests: thyroid gland hormones, antibodies, tumor markers for thyroid cancer, fixation test
Therapeutic procedures:
Use of radioactive iodine 131I for the treatment of thyroid cancer.

IMAGING DIAGNOSTICS
Imaging diagnostics is the most modern way of diagnosing the disease, and is particularly significant in the diagnosis of cancer, whether it is a primary disease sites or distant metastasis.
Procedure:
Magnetic resonance imaging MRI (whole body, head, spine, breast, chest, abdomen, pelvis, upper and lower extremities, musculoskeletal system), Computed tomography CT (head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, upper and lower extremity, musculoskeletal system), in vivo MR spectroscopy, Positron emission tomography PET / CT (whole body), mammography, ultrasound.

PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION SERVICE
Physical medicine and rehabilitation has a great role in improving the quality of life in patients with cancer.
Procedure:
Rehabilitation and physiotherapy of oncological patients diagnosed with all types of malign neoplasms, treatment of psychological problems and disorders for patients suffering malign neoplasms, EMNG diagnostics. Work with patientsITH: treatment through clinics, treatment of temporary patients through consultative medical examination
Methods:
Kinesitherapy, drainage massage, apparature pressotherapy, TENS, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, occupational therapy, cryotherapy, education of patients

PATHOLOGY
The role of histopathology is essential in establishing optimal therapy in oncology, by the determination of precise diagnosis based on microscopic examination of tissue and citology samples.
Procedures:
Ex tempore biopsy, diagnostic pathology and citology, molecular diagnostics on tissue samples.
Equipment:
Microscopes, tissue processors, automated slide stainer, immunostainers, embedding center, microtomes, macrotome, cryotome, qPCR machine
Methods:
Histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, CISH and SISH, morfometry, frozen sections, large sections, autopsy, qPCR - KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, EGFR mutation essays

EXPERIMENTAL ONCOLOGY
The significance of experimental oncology is in diagnostics (various laboratory tests) and research.
Clinical laboratory tests:
Determination of antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis and Helicobacter pylori, chromosome aberrations test, sister chromatide exchange assay, micronucleus test - detection of genotoxic damage in professionals subjected to physical and chemical agents; Real-Time PCR based assays for KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, EGFR mutation in patients with colorectal carcinoma, malignant melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer
Equipment:
Horizontal and vertical electrophoresis apparatus, incubators, horizontal laminar flow chamber

LABORATORY DIAGNOSTICS
Laboratorijska dijagnostika je neophodan segment u svim dijagnostičko-terapijskim procedurama.
Laboratory analyses:
Hematology (Complete blood count, differential blood count, leukocytes...), coagulometric assays (prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time,..), biochemistry (glucose, urea, alkaline phosphatase...), immunology (CIC, serum antibodies...), tumor markers (CEA, CA 15-3, AFP...), flow cytometry (immunophenotyping) and spectrophotometric techniques
Equipment:
Hematology cell counters, coagulometer, biochemical analyzer, electrolyte analyzer, immunoanalyzer, flow cytometer, microscopes, spectrophotometer
